Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender recently claimed that the increase in violent crime in the city is unrelated to the discussion by the council of replacing the Minneapolis Police Department with a community safety and violence prevention department.

Bender made the statement in an interview with WCCO, an interview that came in response to criticism that she and the rest of the city council have not been either available or visible during the recent crime wave.

State Rep. Nolan West (R-Blaine) fired back on his official Facebook page, saying that Bender’s “level of denial” should motivate voters to carefully consider their ballots.

“Look into who you are electing as mayor or to the city council,” West wrote in his post. “If you have any questions, reach out and ask them. If they are worth electing, they should get back to you.”

West warned that Blaine voters should be wary of electing “radical ideologues like Minneapolis.”

“To be clear, I don't think any candidate running for city office in Blaine is this bad. We just need to be vigilant as residents of Blaine,” he said.
