CITY OF SHOREVIEW: Helen Nelson Announced as Citizen of the Year

Citizenyr

City Of Shoreview issued the following announcement on Nov. 21.

Congratulations to Helen Nelson who received the 2020 Shoreview Citizen of the Year Award. Mayor Sandy Martin and the city council presented Helen with the award at their November 16 meeting.

Helen has been a community booster since moving to Shoreview in the late 1970’s. Below are some of her volunteer experiences:

  • School district (621) curriculum and advisory committee member
  • Levy referendum volunteer committee member
  • Kindergarten Center Task Force Chair
  • Parent advisory committee chair, kindergarten center
  • Church volunteer
  • Brownie and Girl Scout leader
  • Turtleman Triathlon volunteer – recipient of the MSI Insurance ‘People Helping People’ award
  • Shoreview Community Foundation Board member – board secretary
  • Slice of Shoreview volunteer – parade committee
  • Sponsors the Fine Arts Scholarship for the Mounds View School District
  • Suburban Ramsey Covid19 Emergency Response Fund volunteer
As you can see, Helen is the true definition of a citizen volunteer. Always looking for more ways to help, Helen also coordinates house projects with Edina Realty volunteer teams. Most recently, she put a team together to work on a city-owned house that is being converted to an affordable rental home.

In the supporting nomination, fellow Shoreview resident and long-time volunteer Nancy Hite states:

“When I think of someone who exemplifies commitment and leadership to enhance Shoreview, Helen Nelson is top of mind. In both her personal and professional life she donates time, money, and talents to our community. I have often heard Helen say that she does not have the capability to lead, but she is a prime example of the servant leadership model, in which everyone else looks to her for ideas, organization, and successful implementation of projects, and the whole team takes the credit.”

When asked what inspires her to volunteer and give back, Helen responded:

“Volunteering is key to a vital community and is needed now more than ever.  Opportunities abound, begin, say ‘yes’, ask friends and neighbors. You meet amazing people and learn so much about yourself and our fabulous community.
