A bill passed by the Minnesota Senate July 21 will improve police departments, Sen. Roger Chamberlain (R-Lino Lakes) said on Facebook.
“Most Minnesota police departments are run with integrity," he said. "This bill enhances that integrity and provides consistency across the state.”
Among other provisions, the reform bill bans the use of “warrior” style training for police, Chamberlain said. It authorizes cities to provide incentives for police to live in the communities where they work, and establishes an independent investigative unit in the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Senator said.
A bill passed in June banned choke holds and neck restraints by police, expanded background checks for employees of law enforcement agencies and included provisions to help officers deal with stress and trauma, Chamberlain said. It also required increased training on autism for police.
The reforms followed the death of George Floyd in police custody in May. His death caused nationwide unrest and a push for police reform.
