Minnesota National Guard's response to protests and unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death cost nearly $13 million.
In a letter to Minnesota Management and Budget Commissioner Myron Frans, Major General Jon Jenson detailed the costs, including $9.45 million for payroll, $2.1 million for meals and per diem, $1 million for vehicles and fuel and $100,000 for lodging, according to The Center Square.
Frans later wrote in a separate letter that funding was expected to be eligible for FEMA reimbursement.
The death of George Floyd on May 25 sparked protests against police brutality and racism that have spread across the nation. Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and the three officers who were present were fired and charged with aiding and abetting murder.
More than 7,000 National Guard members were activated by May 31 in response to burning buildings and damaged businesses in the Twin Cities area.
The Minnesota Legislature will hold a special session to discuss police accountability and reform, providing aid to cities impacted by COVID-19 and a bonding bill.
