After the death of George Floyd, Minneapolis officials are planning for a police-free future by creating a new system for the city, the Center Square reported.
“Decades of police reform have proved that the Minneapolis Police Department cannot be reformed and will never be accountable for its action,” a statement from Council President Lisa Bender and other members of Minneapolis City Council said. “We recognize that we don’t have all the answers about what a police-free future looks like, but our community does. We’re committed to engaging with every willing community member in the City of Minneapolis over the next year to identify what safety looks like for you.”
The city council will be looking into ending the Minneapolis Police Department and enacting a new model.
But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey didn't support the efforts from the council.
“I do not support the full abolition of the police department," he told the Center Square.
State. Rep. Pat Garofalo also said the legislature should discuss dismantling the police department before any actions are taken
"Before the Minneapolis City Council defunds or disbands the Minneapolis Police Department, there needs to be State Legislative hearings on what the consequences of that would mean for our region/state,” Garofalo told the Center Square. “Legislators cannot sit by silently while a rogue city council drives our state into anarchy."
