Ramsey County issued the following announcement on Dec. 26.
The three-lane configuration of Maryland Avenue will remain in place between Arkwright Street and Payne Avenue in Saint Paul following the results of a 4-to-3 lane conversion trial on the roadway earlier this year.
In August, Ramsey County began a 4-to-3 trial on Maryland Avenue between Arkwright Street and Payne Avenue. The temporary road configuration included one travel lane in each direction and a center left-turn lane. From September to November, a project team observed walking, biking and driving impacts and collected community feedback from people who live, work and travel along the segment of Maryland Avenue.
Traffic analyses and resident feedback support maintainint three-lane road configuration, including the new enhanced pedestrian crossing and median refuge at the Desoto Street intersection. Traffic data collected during the trail will be available online in early January 2020.
The temporary three-lane road layout and intersection restrictions at Clark Street and Desoto Street will remain in place through spring 2020, and the project team will continue to observe road conditions and traffic impacts throughout the winter. Installation of the permanent pavement markings and medians are expected to occur as part of the 2020 road construction season.
Ramsey County is in the initial stages of a comprehensive review of all undivided four-lane county roads to analyze the impacts of converting them to three-lane roads to improve pedestrian and roadway safety. Learn more about 4-to-3 lane conversions.
